When to visit the Grand Strand

There isn't one best month. It depends on whether you want beach weather, shorter lines, lower prices or a quieter pace. Here is how the year breaks down.

Summer: June to August

Summer is peak season. July is generally the busiest month and August is the lightest of the summer months, with crowds thinning toward the end. Daytime highs reach about 90°F in July, the ocean is warm, and the seasonal attractions, water parks and concert series are all running. Expect the largest crowds on the beach, in traffic and at the biggest attractions, so book popular shows and tours ahead.

Spring and fall: March to May and September to October

Many locals consider these the best months. Crowds are lighter, restaurants are easier, and golfers come in spring when the weather is cooler. Fall brings festivals, sunny days and an ocean that stays swimmable into October, with crowds dropping sharply after Labor Day. Some summer-only attractions begin closing in September, so check hours before you go. Late May can be busy when motorcycle rally crowds arrive.

Winter: November to February

Winter is the quiet season. Hotel and resort rates are at their lowest, and holiday shows and events run from early November into early January. The weather is cool and can be unpredictable, and some attractions and seasonal businesses close or cut their hours. Indoor options such as rainy-day picks, shows and theaters, museums and indoor mini golf are the safest bets.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through the end of November. The risk is higher from late summer into early fall and falls sharply by late October. If you're traveling in that window, watch the forecast, and consider flexible bookings.

Always check hours

Off-season hours vary a lot, and many places do not post them. Each listing on this site shows hours when the business publishes them. When it doesn't, call ahead.
